Trudi Brown QC has practiced in the area of family law since 1974. She was one of the first in Victoria to embrace the concept of Collaborative Law as a better way to resolve family disputes than appearing in court. She believes that families are still families after a separation, although they are in a different configuration, and the way to determine the best new plan is through some form of cooperation. Although judges have the best of intentions, they cannot understand what each family needs after hearing a trial. When there are children involved, the parents are the ones who know their children best, and they need to play an active role in the formation of the new family structure. Trudi is also a mediator , a parent coordinator, and on the list of lawyers to interview children for “Views of the Child reports”. Collaborative law is a very useful tool, along with these other initiatives to help families recover. It may not be useful in all circumstances, but it is often a very good start.
